What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is surgery to change the shape of the nose. During the operation, areas such as a hump, the tip or the width of the nose can be corrected so that the nose is more in harmony with the other features of the face. The right design is different for each person; perfect symmetry cannot be achieved for everyone.

If nasal blockage is related to the structure of the nose or a deviated septum, assessing the airway is also part of the decision-making. Correcting the appearance and correcting a breathing problem can be considered in one surgical plan, but not every nasal blockage is resolved by cosmetic surgery. [1]

What is reviewed at the consultation?

Describe the change you would like, your breathing, any previous surgeries and your medical conditions. Bring a list of your medications, supplements, drug allergies and tobacco use. The examination and assessment of facial proportions help clarify the suitable options and the real limitations.

Before making a final decision, ask about the proposed method, the type of anesthesia, the possibility of needing revision surgery and the expected result. A sample photo is useful only for discussing your taste; it does not guarantee that your nose will take exactly that shape. [2]

What to expect after surgery

To protect the nose, a splint or dressing may be placed on it, and sometimes supportive devices are placed inside the nose. The initial swelling decreases over a few weeks, but the fine details of the final shape may take up to about a year; swelling can fluctuate during this period.

When to remove the splint, how to care for stitches, medication use, returning to work and starting exercise should be determined according to your surgeon's plan. Not everyone follows the same course; follow your own personal instructions rather than general advice from the internet. [3]

Complications you should talk about

Infection, impaired healing, a change in skin sensation, breathing problems or dissatisfaction with the appearance are possible complications. A hole in the nasal septum (septal perforation) may also occur, and in some cases it is difficult to repair. Revision surgery may be needed. Before consenting to surgery, ask your surgeon about the risks that apply to your own situation. [4]

Questions to ask at the consultation

  • Which change to my nose is realistic?
  • Does my breathing problem need separate treatment?
  • When can I go back to work and exercise?
  • Which symptoms after surgery need an urgent call?

This explanation is a general guide to help you become familiar with the surgery. The choice of method and the aftercare plan are determined after an examination and based on your circumstances.
