What does blepharoplasty do?

Blepharoplasty is surgery on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids or both. Depending on the problem, excess skin or puffiness caused by eyelid fat is corrected. Loose skin of the upper eyelid sometimes limits the field of vision; in this case, assessing eyelid function is also important.

The goal of surgery is not the same for everyone. The main problem may be excess skin, puffiness or sagging of the lower eyelid. The choice of method should be based on an examination, not only on resemblance to photos of other people. [1]

What information is needed for the consultation?

Tell the doctor about your medical conditions, previous eye problems, drug allergies and surgical history. A list of your medications and supplements and information about tobacco use are also important. Talk with the surgeon about the appearance you expect and any eye discomfort, such as dryness.

At the consultation, the surgical options, whether local or general anesthesia will be used, and the possible risks, are explained. It is a good opportunity to ask which part of your problem can be corrected with eyelid surgery and what you should expect from the result. [2]

Care and the recovery process

Swelling, bruising, a feeling of irritation or dryness of the eye can be present in the first days. Depending on the type of surgery, the surgeon may prescribe cold compresses or a specific ointment and medication. Do not use eye drops or ointments on your own in place of the prescribed treatment.

Make sure you are given clear instructions on caring for the wound and the eye, when the stitches come out and when you can return to activity. During the healing period, protection from sunlight and wearing sunglasses are important. Also ask about the right time to exercise and the schedule for your next visit. [3]

Possible complications

Bleeding, infection, dry eyes, difficulty closing the eyelid completely, a change in the position of the lower eyelid and a lasting scar are possible complications. A change in vision and, in very rare cases, loss of vision are also important risks of this surgery. Talk with the surgeon about these risks and about how to contact the surgical team quickly after surgery. [4]

Questions to ask at the consultation

  • Do the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both need to be assessed?
  • How does my previous eye problem affect the choice of method?
  • What does care of the eye and stitches involve?
  • If pain or a change in vision occurs, how do I follow up?

This explanation is a general guide to help you become familiar with the surgery. The choice of method and the aftercare plan are determined after an examination and based on your circumstances.
